Happy Monday, Everyone! Before I jump into the exciting news I have for you this week, I want to mention a few events coming up that are worth noting. These include the Cybersecurity Summits of Seattle, Washington and Newport, RI, which will be around next week. Seattle’s is occuring on July 18th, and Newport’s is occuring from July 18th to the 20th. Be sure to make them if you can, and always keep your eye out for other events, as there are so many great ones that you do not want to miss!
NIST News
Why are your employees still clicking on phishing emails? NIST recently published an article explaining their research which uncovered one reason why people are still clicking. NIST researchers found that employees are more likely to click on links and attachments that are sent in emails that discuss their work responsibilities. It was less likely for those employees to recognize the email as a phishing attack because they are more concerned with responding to their job duties, rather than trying to spot an attack.
The Rise of Cryptojacking
As ransomware is declining, cryptojacking is taking its place. Cryptojacking occurs when hackers use another’s computer or device to mine cryptocurrency. Cryptominers have taken over, as they are continuously invading individual and business-owned computers and using their power to send cryptocurrency to themselves. Besides the act of theft, Cryptojacking also slows down machines, overheats batteries, and even destroys devices to the point where they are unusable. Cryptojacking is much more cost effective for hackers, and also much easier to pursue, due to the fact that it only requires a few lines of code. Because of this issue, implementing security precautions at your business is more important than ever.
