Happy Monday, Everyone! Some cybersecurity news is coming out of California this week…
First IoT Cybersecurity Law Passed
California has just become the first state to pass a cybersecurity law that covers smart devices. Beginning on January 1st, 2020, all devices manufactured in California that connect to the internet must be equipped with reasonable security features that will “prevent the unlawful access, alteration, or information disclosure.”
With all of the recent IoT device hacks, this law is reasonable and needed. IoT devices are becoming increasingly common, and are beginning to play a role in a majority of our daily lives, It is now more important than ever to protect them.
National Cyber Security Awareness Month
As many of you may know, the month of October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM). Each week of the month has a specific theme, this week’s being “Millions of Rewarding Jobs – Educating for a Career in Cybersecurity.” More specifically, this week’s focus is on “ways to motivate parents, teachers, and counselors to learn more about the field and how to best inspire students and others to seek highly fulfilling cybersecurity careers.” The theme was inspired by the recent lack of professionals in the field to fill the many open positions within business’ security departments. Stay tuned for additional topics.

There are a few important events happening this week. First, the 8th Annual (ISC)2 Security Congress is taking place in New Orleans, Louisiana from today, October 8th until the 10th.
