CUI Workshop & DoD Security Concerns

Good morning and happy Monday, everyone! I have lots of great news this week, but first, I want to talk about a few events that will be happening soon. As mentioned previously, SENEDIA’s Defense Innovation Days start today! A few of our NeQter Labs employees will be there running our booth, and we hope to see you there, too! Also, on Wednesday, August 29th, the Cybersecurity Summit: Chicago will be happening. This is supposed to be a great networking event, which will feature security experts discussing topics such as incident response and cyber defense.

New SBIR Grants

NIST announced early last week that it has awarded $4 million in grants to 21 small businesses through NIST’s SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) Program. The purpose of this program is to allow small companies to participate in the NIST mission, to “support the development and advancement of cybersecurity, manufacturing, IoT, and more.”

CUI Workshop

In early October, NIST will be holding a Controlled Unclassified Information Security Requirements Workshop in Maryland. The workshop will provide an overview of CUI, DFARS, and the NIST SP 800-171 & 800-171A publications. This event will be a great opportunity for those businesses who still need to get in compliance with NIST SP 800-171 and DFARS.

DoD in the News

The Senate Armed Services Committee addressed an important issue late last week: the Pentagon and the DoD are not doing enough to protect CUI. Bloomberg reported the red flags came with the recent breach in Rhode Island when China hacked a small contractor who worked for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. The lawmakers wrote, “We are concerned with existing regulations and best practices not being followed in manners such as contracts lacking appropriate cybersecurity clauses, computer networks operating without multifactor authentication for access, strong remote user policies and insufficient third-party verification of compliance with cybersecurity standards.”

That’s all for today! Thank you for tuning in to this week’s segment of “Mondays With Miranda!” Keep up to date with current news by following NeQter Labs on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. As always, if anyone has any questions, feel free to email [email protected]. Enjoy the rest of your week!
